Over the centuries, the design of Japanese roofing tiles evolved, incorporating ornamental elements like the onigawara, decorative ridge-end tiles that often feature mythical creatures believed to ward off evil spirits.

Historically, the production of kawara roof tiles was regionally concentrated in renowned kiln sites such as those in Kyoto, where intricate patterns and high-quality glazes were applied to enhance the aesthetic and functional qualities of Japanese roof tiles. These ceramic tiles, crafted from fired clay, provided not just durability but a visual connection to the landscape.

Crafting the Silvery Black Glaze of Japanese Roof Tiles

The signature silvery black glaze of kawara tiles is crafted through high-temperature firing, a process that enhances the visual and functional appeal of traditional Japanese roof tiles. The iron-rich clay base is coated with a specialised glaze made from minerals like feldspar and iron oxide. Fired at temperatures between 1,100 and 1,200°C, the glaze reacts with the clay, forming a dark, almost metallic finish that gives these roof tiles their distinctive glossy, reflective surface. A reduction firing technique may also be used to achieve a sleek, silvery-black shine that changes with the light, adding depth to the design.

Yuko Nagayama & Associates’ design for the AOI Celestie Coffee Roastery in Nagoya breathes new life into the traditional kawara concept by using modern techniques to craft the roof. This striking design features 28,000 tiles, created using the wet extrusion method and coated with a glass glaze that shifts through six shades of blue. The resulting gradient effect recalls the timeless beauty of Japanese roof tiles while creating a dynamic visual identity that reflects the natural surroundings and modern urban landscape. The innovative use of glazed tiles in this contemporary café design highlights the enduring beauty of traditional Japanese roofing materials while ensuring longevity. Tiles like these are known for their ability to retain colour and integrity over time, making them a perfect choice for both aesthetics and durability in Japanese architecture.
